A 42-year-old Wichita man was killed when his SUV struck a semi head-on Friday afternoon on Broadway near 119th Street South.

A black Yukon was northbound on Broadway when it crossed the center line about 3:45 p.m. and struck the southbound semi about 200 yards north of the Sedgwick-Sumner County line on 119th, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Hargus said.

The driver of the semi, a 42-year-old man from Ponca City, Okla., sustained minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene.

The victim has a Wichita address, but the SUV is registered to a Valley Center resident, Hargus said.

Hargus said witnesses told authorities that the Yukon driver crossed the center line several times and drifted completely into the southbound traffic when the accident happened. The semi with a loaded trailer ended up in the west ditch.

“All evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate this was sudden,” Hargus said, adding that the semi driver “had a very short time to respond. He has maybe 40 feet of skid marks, then he veered to the west into the ditch.”

It’s not known whether speed, alcohol or another impairment played a role in the accident, Hargus said.

Identity of the victim is being withheld until his next of kin is notified.
