Two events will be held March 2 at Pioneer Bluffs near Matfield Green.

The first event is a tree-pruning workshop designed for people who have fruit trees or want to have them. It’s a free community workshop beginning at 10 a.m. March 2. Larry Crouse, Butler County Extension horticulture agent, will lead the workshop. Participants will need to bring their own pruning tools. Lunch will be offered at the end of the workshop.

The second event begins at 1:30 p.m. when Keyna Bugner presents a two-part talk entitled: “Respecting the Land: One Woman’s Quest.”

A native Kansan, Bugner grew up in Emporia, earned a degree in wildlife biology at Colorado State University and then joined the Peace Corps as a forestry extension officer. She traveled to Zambia and now lives in Ellensburg, Wash., where she works for the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

Her talk at 1:30 p.m. will focus on her two-year stay in Zambia. Beginning at 2:30 p.m., she will discuss her work in Washington and how a group of concerned citizens started the Food Access Coalition.

There is no charge for any of the events, including the lunch, but donations will be accepted.

For more information or to make reservations for lunch, contact Lynn Smith, director of Pioneer Bluffs, at 620-753-3484 or email her at lynn@pioneerbluffs.org.

Pioneer Bluffs is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located one mile north of Matfield Green or 15 miles south of Cottonwood Falls on Flint Hills National Scenic Byway K-177.
