Investigators suspect a medical condition triggered a 56-year-old Wichita man to lose control of his vehicle on Sunday afternoon, with the resulting crash killing him and his wife, along with a service dog.
Randall Storms was driving east in the 5800 block of East Central shortly before 3 p.m. when his 2010 Town and Country veered left of center, struck a curb, went into a drainage ditch and hit a retaining wall, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.
Storms’ 59-year-old wife, Suzy, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Storms was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said the vehicle was “just driving normally” before it began drifting to the left in the moments before the crash, Schroeder said. Speed wasn’t an issue, he said.
The vehicle had been modified so that Randall Storms, who used a wheelchair, could operate it with his hands.
“At this point, it doesn’t seem anything other than the medical condition occurred to cause the accident,” Schroeder said.
There was not a blown tire or any other reason evident “for him to drive across traffic like that,” Schroeder said.
The Stormses are the second and third people to die in a traffic accident in Wichita this year.
