A 21-year-old man suffered a broken leg but no other serious injuries when he was hit by a car while trying to cross a west Wichita street late Thursday night, police said.

The man was hit in the 600 block of Ridge Road shortly after 10 p.m., Lt. Doug Nolte said. The collision site is just south of Central near Newell.

“It wasn’t close to the crosswalk,” Nolte said.

Witnesses said the man appeared to be talking on his cellphone when he stepped out into the street and was struck by a southbound Ford Focus being driven by a 20-year-old woman. She stayed at the scene following the collision, Nolte said.

The pedestrian was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, where an examination determined his injuries were minor except for his broken leg, Nolte said.
