A man was arrested after he was beaten by a homeowner’s “ugly stick” during a clash resulting from an interrupted burglary early Thursday morning in north Wichita, police said.

The 31-year-old man forced his way into a house in the 3300 block of North Jeanette shortly after 1:30 a.m. and was gathering property to steal when he was confronted by the resident, who was awakened by the noise, Lt. Doug Nolte said.

The suspect picked up a metal pipe and hit the 42-year-old resident in both arms, Nolte said, but the resident recovered to get the “ugly stick” he keeps by his bed and beat the intruder with it. The suspect was able to get away from the house northwest of 29th and Arkansas, but police caught him a short time later wearing the resident’s jacket.
