The number of cattle at Kansas feedlots was down in December by 60,000 head, or about 6 percent, from December 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The number of cattle moving into the feedlots was up, and the number being sold for slaughter was down in December compared to December 2011, according to the USDA data.

The drought has raised costs significantly for livestock farmers pushing many to sell off parts of their herds.
