A 6-year-old Wichita boy critically hurt Saturday in a rollover crash on K-96 has died, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper said.

Authorities found Cryisol Hall unresponsive after he and other family members were ejected from an SUV as it tumbled down a steep ditch at the Hillside exit shortly after 3:15 p.m.

Cryisol was rushed by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where he died shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, Trooper John Maier said.

Evidence at the crash scene suggested no one in the vehicle was properly restrained, he said.

“The massive head trauma was just too much,” Maier said by phone Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say 31-year-old Crystal Ross, Cryisol’s mother, was westbound on K-96 when she exited too late at Hillside. She apparently lost control of her 1999 GMC Yukon Denali, which skidded and rolled multiple times into the ditch.

Three members of the family – Cryisol, Ross and a 12-year-old boy — were thrown from the SUV, Maier said; an 8-year-old boy climbed out later.

Ross, also found unresponsive, remained in “critical but stable condition” at Wesley, Maier said Sunday. She suffered broken bones and other internal injuries but is expected to recover, he said.

The 8-year-old and 12-year-old boys, Ross’ sons, were released from Wesley on Saturday with some scrapes and bruises, Maier said. On Sunday, the hospital listed the 8-year-old in fair condition. He was likely readmitted following his release, a Wesley operator said Sunday.

Witness reports indicate speed and other factors may have played a role in the crash, Maier said Sunday.

“There have definitely been some other contributing factors,” he said.

Follow up is expected to continue this week.
