Venture capital investing in Kansas was down in the fourth quarter and for the year, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree Report.

The report for Kansas showed there were three deals in the three-month period ended Dec. 31, 2012. They totaled $12.18 million.

That compares with 16 deals totaling $23.6 million in fourth quarter of 2011.

For the year, the number and value of deals in Kansas also declined from a year ago: 10 deals totaling $39 million in 2012 compared with 46 deals totaling $57.25 million in 2011.

Nationally, there were 3,698 deals totaling $26.5 billion in 2012, according to the report. That represented a 6 percent decline in deals and a 10 percent decrease in value — $29.5 billion — from 2011, the report said.

The three deals in Kansas for fourth quarter 2012 were:

•  $9.06 million to Kansas City, Kan.-based Aratana Therapeutics, an animal health drug development company.

•  $2.03 million to Lenexa-based TVAX Biomedical, a drug development company.

•  $1.1 million to Prairie Village-based InvenQuery, a software company.
