Fire caused extensive damage to a metal storage building at a west Wichita heating and air conditioning business Wednesday afternoon, a fire official said.

The fire started at Hanna Heating and Air Conditioning shortly after 4 p.m. after workers had gone home for the day, Deputy Fire Chief Tammy Snow said. Passersby saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, in the 200 block of North West Street, and reported the blaze, she said.

The fire was contained in a 50-by-100-foot area but spread to the building’s mezzanine and traveled along the roofline, Snow said.

It took firefighters more than two hours to control. Additional fire crews were dispatched to assist, she said.

Loss estimates and the cause were still undetermined Wednesday evening, Snow said. No one was hurt in the fire.

Firefighters stretched water hoses across West Street, stopping traffic from Douglas to Second Street for more than two hours Wednesday during the after-work commute.
