She was stopped on Second Street near I-235 Tuesday night, she told police, when her evening took a nightmarish turn.

A man with a gun walked up to her car at about 8:30 p.m., got inside and forced her to drive around the city for about 45 minutes, Lt. Doug Nolte said. They returned to the area of Central and Hydraulic, where the gunman forced her to drive behind the Dog-N-Shake.

Once there, the 31-year-old woman said, the gunman set her pants on fire and stole her Kindle Fire before walking away, Nolte said. She called 911 from that location, and she was taken to the burn unit of Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment of burns on her hands and arms.

“At this point, we are going over the facts of the case to see what we can corroborate,” Nolte said. “There was evidence of a fire.”

Police are also exploring other possible explanations for the woman’s injuries, Nolte said.
