Wichita State University’s Elliott School of Communication has selected a new director.

Media historian Matthew Cecil will join the department June 30, university officials said in a news release Friday. He is an associate professor in the journalism and mass communication department at South Dakota State University.

Cecil has taught at Purdue University and the University of Oklahoma and has worked as a newspaper reporter, a political press secretary and in corporate media relations, according to the release. He earned his doctorate in mass communication from the University of Iowa in 2000 and holds other degrees from Minnesota State University at Mankato, and South Dakota State University.

Cecil succeeds interim director Lou Heldman, a former president and publisher of The Eagle. Heldman took over the position in 2011 after former director Susan Huxman left to accept the presidency at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, Ontario.

The Elliott School, noted for its integrated approach to communication studies — including speech, journalism, public relations and strategic communication studies — has about 30 faculty and staff members. It enrolls more than 2,000 students each year and is part of WSU’s Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
