School volunteer files to run for Wichita school board

Joy Eakins, a software design consultant and school volunteer, has filed to run for the District 2 seat on the Wichita school board.

Eakins, 42, said she decided to run after serving on the Business Education Innovation Partnership, a group that pairs area business leaders with district officials in hopes of finding ways to improve efficiency and cut the district’s costs.

“That exposure really showed me a lot of the issues schools are facing and business leaders are facing,” Eakins said. “I thought this might be a good place for someone with my experience to step up and … try to help bridge those interests.”

Eakins and her husband, Eric, an architect, have one son in fourth grade at Hyde International Studies and Communications Magnet Elementary School.

She is running for the school board seat held by Connie Dietz, who announced last week that she would not seek re-election.
