Joe Bob Clements is leaving Kansas State after a four-season stint as the team’s defensive ends coach to take a similar position at Oklahoma State.
Cowboys football coach Mike Gundy announced the move on his twitter account Sunday morning, describing Clements as a “great addition to our staff.”
Clements’ departure comes as a surprise following the Wildcats’ recent success. K-State is coming off an 11-win season in which it won its first Big 12 championship since 2003 and played in the Fiesta Bowl.
Clements is a former K-State player who got his coaching start with the Wildcats in 1999 as a graduate assistant. He went on to become a full-time assistant under Bill Snyder during his first run as K-State’s coach. Clements made $255,000 a year before bonuses, and was considered one of the top recruiters on K-State’s staff.
Reasons for Clements’ departure are not fully known, but he told Gopowercat.com that the switch is a “personal move,” adding “I will be forever indebted to Bill Snyder.” Attempts to reach Clements for further comment have been unsuccessful.
Clements joins Oklahoma State in the middle of a staff shakeup that began with the departure of former defensive coordinator Bill Young, who was replaced by fellow assistant Glenn Spencer last week.
