Authorities are asking the public to help identify a man who robbed a Derby convenience store at gunpoint Thursday.
Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said the man walked into the Casey’s General Store, 400 N. Rock Road, around 9:30 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk. The robber — described as a balding white man in his 30s or 40s who is 5-feet-7 to 6 feet tall with an average build — was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun.
The man collected an undetermined amount of cash and Marlboro cigarettes, then ran east from the store, Lee said. He was last seen getting in the passenger door of a newer-model, dark blue Ford Mustang. The car then fled north on Rock, Lee said.
Police on Friday released a security camera photo that shows the man standing at a counter and holding a bandana that had slipped off his face during the robbery. He has brown hair and was wearing a black jacket, Lee said.
Anyone with information about the robbery or who recognizes the man is asked to call the Derby Police Department at 316-788-1557 or Derby Crime Stoppers at 316-788-8477 (TIPS). Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.
“We’re hopeful that someone recognizes him. It shows a lot of his face in the photo,” Lee said.
“Armed robbery in Derby is a very rare occurrence.”
