— An armed man on Wednesday reportedly barricaded himself inside a Hutchinson house following a brief chase with law enforcement, Hutchinson police said.

The man knows the people who live at the house in the 800 block of North Monroe, according to Hutchinson police Capt. Troy Hoover. Police evacuated everyone from the home, and those inside reported the man stayed in the basement with a weapon, he said.

Hoover said officers initially were communicating with the man by loudspeaker but started talking to him on the phone early Wednesday evening. They were hopeful for a peaceful surrender, he said.

Police on Wednesday closed a portion of North Monroe, between Eighth and Ninth avenues, where a short chase involving the Kansas Highway Patrol had culminated at about 11 a.m. The chase started with a trooper spotting a parole absconder in a red Chevrolet HHR that was stolen from Wichita, Hoover said.

“We had a short pursuit there with a stolen vehicle from Wichita,” Hutchinson police Lt. John Moore said Wednesday afternoon. “The driver fled on foot and reportedly ran into 806 N. Monroe with a gun.”

Police used a K-9 unit and the local Emergency Response Team during the standoff.

The nearby Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon, but students were released at their normal time, Moore said. Allen students who walk home south of the school were transported by bus instead.
