A 31-year-old Missouri man died in a crash early this morning about 45 minutes after he reportedly got his pickup stuck in a Miami County ditch.

Miami County Sheriff deputies responded to a call this morning that a pickup had gotten stuck in a ditch about 2:30 a.m. at Mission Road and West 223rd Street.

The caller reported that the driver of the pickup was intoxicated and he was trying to get the truck freed.

By the time deputies arrived, the truck and driver were gone.

About 45 minutes later, emergency crews responded to an injury crash at Mission Road and 231st Street.

A witness had heard a crash and discovered that a 1991 Chevrolet pickup had crashed into a ditch, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s office. Investigators believe it was the same truck that was stuck earlier.

Investigators determined that the pickup was southbound on Mission Road, went through a T-intersection and crashed into the embankment of a ditch on the south side of West 231st Street.

The driver, Anthony Bowers of Cleveland, Mo., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the sheriff’s office.

The crash is under investigation.
