A 54-year-old Reno County Jail inmate died from apparent natural causes Sunday night in his cell, Reno County Sheriff’s Office officials said Monday.

James Richard Shumpert of Hutchinson was found unresponsive on his bunk at about 8:45 p.m. in a cell he occupied by himself. Deputies immediately started CPR and an ambulance was called. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates Shumpert, who had a history of medical problems, died from natural causes, officials said. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation and an autopsy will be performed.

Shumpert was arrested about 11 p.m. Saturday for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal possession of a firearm and a probation violation, an official said.
