Huelskamp declines to vote for Boehner

U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp did not give Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, his vote Thursday.

Boehner was re-elected Speaker, but Huelskamp, a Republican with homes in Fowler and Hutchinson, voted for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. Jordan has been chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

“My vote today was a vote of ‘no confidence’ in the current leadership of the House of Representatives,” Huelskamp said in a statement.

“They have had two years to demonstrate conservative leadership, and have failed — as evidenced by deal after deal that neglects our principles of fiscal responsibility, limited government, free enterprise, and traditional values,” Huelskamp said.

He said he fears that unless the House “begins to stand as a beacon of conservatism” and offer an alternative to big government, the Democrats may take over the House in two years.

Boehner won another two-year term as Speaker with 220 votes to 192 for California Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Fourteen other votes — including Huelskamp’s vote — were divided among other alternatives.

The three other Kansas Republicans serving in the House supported Boehner.

In December, House Republican leadership bounced Huelskamp from two prime committees: Agriculture and Budget. Huelskamp most recently split with Boehner when Huelskamp voted against the “fiscal cliff” legislation, because of the lack of spending cuts.

Some other House members bumped from a committee assignment also voted for someone other than Boehner Thursday.
