Don Hill did so much for House of Hope Wichita, the nonprofit is working to make sure no one ever forgets it.
The Don Hill Family Scholarship Fund was established last year in memory of Hill, an attorney who donated his legal services to the nonprofit for eight years until his death in 2012.
More than $24,000 has been raised for the scholarship fund. The current goal is $50,000, though it is a perpetual scholarship and will continue to grow as donations are made.
House of Hope, located near Harry and Oliver, helps troubled teens and their families. It also offers counseling for all family-related issues.
The scholarship will benefit families seeking counseling. House of Hope Wichita will not turn away a family because of financial reasons, and the scholarship fills the gap between what the family can pay and the nonprofits fee.
We figure this scholarship is us coming alongside them and making possible what they cant do on their own, said Kim Snapp, founder and executive director for House of Hope Wichita. Just like Don came alongside us and helped us with what we couldnt do on our own.
Hill helped with the incorporation, bylaws and legal paperwork for the nonprofit. But Snapp said the real value of Hill was in the encouragement he brought.
Carol Hill said her husband worked with nonprofit organizations without payment because of his relationship with God.
Whatever he was led to do, he did, Carol Hill said. He loved helping people.
She said the scholarship is an honor to Don for the work he did throughout his life.
Everyone said how he was same to everyone, Snapp said. It didnt matter what you needed help with, he had committed his life to serving the Lord and serving those around him.
To honor Hill and his family, House of Hope Wichita presented the Barnabus award in his name. This award is given to the volunteer or donor who has shown the most encouragement.
