Police on Monday gave new details about a double murder and suicide discovered Saturday at a Wichita home.

Investigators determined that Daryle Ellis, 77, and his wife, Bertha Ellis, 78, were the murder victims and that Adrian Urbano, 38, shot them multiple times and shot himself more than once, said Wichita police Lt. Scott Heimerman. Urbano was Bertha Ellis’ grandson.

“We’re very confident that Mr. Urbano was the shooter,” he said. “We have an idea of a motive … but we’re not releasing it as this time.”

Urbano used a handgun recovered at the scene, he said.

The shootings occurred the day before Urbano’s 39th birthday, a police report shows.

It appears that the shootings happened Thursday evening but weren’t discovered until Saturday afternoon by a man renting a basement apartment from the Ellises at their home at 337 N. Ash, Heimerman said.

He gave this account: The renter heard a disturbance upstairs Thursday night. The renter became concerned by Saturday afternoon after not seeing anyone upstairs. He called a friend, and when they went up to check and looked inside, they could see at least one person lying on the floor. They backed out of the home and called 911. Police responded a little after noon Saturday.
