Kansas hogs up 1 percent from last quarter, last year

The Dec. 1 inventory of hogs on Kansas farms totaled 1.91 million head, up 1 percent from Sept. 1, and from Dec 1, 2011.

Hogs and pigs kept for breeding totaled 170,000, 9 percent of the total, and was unchanged from Sept. 1 and from a year ago.

Market hogs, at 1.74 million head, were up 1 percent from Sept. 1 and from a year ago.

Market hogs by weight: 50 pounds and less, 510,000 head, unchanged from a year ago; 50-119 pounds, 410,000, up 17 percent; 120-179 pounds, 290,000, unchanged; 180 and over pounds, 530,000, down 7 percent.

The September-November pig crop, at 784,000 head, was almost unchanged from 2011.
