A routine traffic stop early Saturday morning led to a police chase, during which shots were fired.

Sgt. Scott Brunow said police stopped a vehicle in the 800 block of South Washington at 1:40 a.m. The driver took off and led police on a chase that ended at Maple and Leonine in west Wichita.

During the chase, the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, fired two rounds from a 9 mm handgun inside the vehicle.

When stopped, the driver threw the gun and some methamphetamine onto the ground, Brunow said.

The driver, 30, was arrested and booked for possession of meth with intent to sell, other drug violations, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and multiple traffic charges.
