New Year’s resolution for all politicians: “When I am asked a question that can be answered with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ I will answer ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ If they ask for an explanation, I will take no more than 15 seconds to explain.”

Our federal government is bailing out the wealthy homeowners in New York for beachfront homes destroyed by Sandy while Sedgwick County is taxing low-income homes destroyed by April’s tornado.

So our feckless governor and legislators hate taxes? I have to inform them that a sales tax by any other name is also a tax. It just hits the lower 98 percent of all taxpayers the hardest.

It has been almost a year since the announcement that Boeing would leave, and it makes even less sense now. The company may regret this decision as much as the one to divest the commercial division here when Spirit AeroSystems was formed. It’s sad for the employees and community.

So on Christmas Day when the kids were acting up, I said, “I know 20 children who would have loved to act up today on Christmas.” My family’s response to that was: “We are tired of hearing about the 20 kids. It’s depressing.”

Police are in a real quandary. The proliferation of guns in the hands of wackos and criminals poses danger for all of us, including police, and they should logically support efforts for gun limits. On the other hand, the proliferation of guns assures that law enforcement is a growth industry.

The assault-weapons ban had no effect on the murder rate. Our leaders will have to tackle either the hard, complex problem of mental illness or the quick, easy answer of a feel-good, useless assault-weapons ban. With our leaders’ track record, which do you think they will pick?

The primary problem is that too many people love assault rifles. Our Constitution was not amended with that in mind, but needs to be.

We don’t need “smart guns.” We need smart people.

Colorado pot farms might deplete our water supply.

I applaud The Wichita Eagle for the beautiful picture and “Merry Christmas” on the front page on Tuesday. I am quite sure you will get negative responses, but it was so refreshing not to see “happy holidays.”

My mother made Christmas special. After 21 years, I still miss her at Christmas. It is just not the same.
