Sedgwick County residents will have the chance to get rid of their dry Christmas trees and come home with fresh mulch. Through Jan. 21, residents can deposit their trees at local recycling areas, where they will be chipped into mulch on site.
This is the sixth year the Sedgwick County Department of Environmental Resources and the Wichita Park and Recreation department have organized Christmas tree recycling centers. Each year between 4,500 and 5,500 trees are recycled.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 33 million live Christmas trees are sold in North America every year. One alternative the agency suggests is buying a potted tree that can be planted after the holiday.
Sedgwick County asks that all lights and ornaments be removed from the trees before they are dropped off for recycling.

Butler County: Trees can be recycled free of charge at the Butler County landfill, 2963 Southwest 40th Street, El Dorado. The landfill is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
