Wichita police are investigating a drive-by shooting incident that happened late Saturday afternoon on I-135 in south Wichita.

The shooting was reported at 4:05 p.m. by an EMS crew.

Two men were leaving the Planeview neighborhood after visiting relatives when they noticed a 2005 or newer Lincoln Navigator pass them, make a U turn and started following them.

The Lincoln Navigator kept following the men as they made several turns and proceeded to get on I-135, according to Sgt. Bart Brunscheen, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

Once on I-135, the Lincoln Navigator pulled even and four to five Hispanic men in their 20s flashed gang signs. After pulling ahead of the two men, a passenger in the back seat of the Navigator pulled a gun.

“The driver start to make maneuvers to get away and his front driver’s window shatters out, a bullet impacts the steering column and his hand catches the glass fragments,” Brunscheen said. “The driver reported he heard three shots.”

Both vehicles exited I-135 and drove east on Harry until the two men saw an ambulance at a housing duplex and drove up asking for help. The Navigator left the scene.

The man whose hand is injured by glass fragments was taken to Via Christi Hospital on Harry.

Police are looking for a cream or white Lincoln Navigator that is 2005 or newer. It also has nice rims and custom seats, Brunscheen said.

“If anyone has seen this vehicle, the gang unit would be interested in following up on leads,” Brunscheen said.
