Share the Season is an annual campaign that offers one-time aid to people affected by unforeseen hardships. The people are not identified to protect their privacy.

When this couple opened their mailbox and found foreclosure papers a few weeks ago, desperation drove them to seek financial help through Share the Season.

Earlier this year, the husband unexpectedly lost a lucrative job. Because he worked on a commission-only basis, there were no unemployment payments.

“As of that Friday we had no more paycheck. It was a hard hit,” the wife, in her 50s, told The Eagle.

By July, the husband, 60, had suffered his second stroke, days after the couple’s daughter was wed.

Bills piled up — both medical and living expenses — after the wife rushed her husband to the emergency room. Then the couple fell behind on their mortgage payments.

The husband and wife are both employed now. But their finances are still a mess, she said. The foreclosure papers came Dec. 3, even though the pair asked the bank to modify their loan in August.

“We don’t know what we are going to do. I mean, where are we going to go if we lose our house?” the wife said.

She added: “It takes a while to catch up when you don’t have a paycheck.”

Share the Season paid money toward the husband’s medical bills and for fuel used to heat the couple’s rural home. The wife said the money “gives you peace of mind for a little while.”

“It’s awesome. It’s awesome,” she said of Share the Season. “They pass no judgment on anyone. I’ve always told my kids never to look at someone and say, ‘What’s wrong with them?’ Because you never know when you’ll be in that situation.”

So far, Share the Season has raised $177,704.64.
