Less than a week before Christmas, a Powerball player hit the jackpot after purchasing the winning ticket in northeast Kansas that is estimated to be worth $50 million.

Wednesday night’s drawing showed that the winning ticket matched all numbers: 5, 8, 20, 23 and 30 with a Powerball of 3, Kansas Lottery officials said Thursday. The holder of the winning ticket should sign the ticket immediately and put in a safe place until the ticket is claimed, lottery officials said.

The winner can take the prize as an annuity paid out in 30 payments over 29 years or as a cash lump sum. The cash option for the prize is an estimated $32.7 million, according to lottery officials.

Kansas’ northeast region where the ticket was sold includes 21 counties: Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Doniphan, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Atchison, Geary, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, Osage, Douglas, Franklin, Miami, Morris and the north half of Lyon.

The Powerball jackpot returns to an estimated $40 million for Saturday’s drawing.

The largest Powerball jackpot winner in Kansas was a Great Bend man, who claimed a $96 million prize in November 2009, lottery officials said.

A person in Franklin County shared a record Mega Millions jackpot of $656 million in March, 2012, the lottery said. The winner received $157.9 million.
