You can buy gas for less than $3 a gallon in Wichita again.
The Speedway ConocoPhillips station at Market and Dewey is selling gas at $2.999 a gallon, a tenth of a cent short of the $3 mark.
The price of gas has been dropping and most stations are selling regular at a few cents above $3.
Speedway owner Yasunari “Jack” Fukuda said he decided to crack the $3 barrier Friday when gas elsewhere was selling about $3.12.
Fukuda said he’s been tracking prices around the state and while some other stations were getting close by Tuesday noon, none have yet joined him at the sub-$3 level. He said he plans to stay there through Friday.
“It’s a Christmas gift,” he said. “We just wanted to do something for the community and make people happy.”
Chris Wilcoxen of Wichita, who bought $10 worth of sub-$3 gasoline, was indeed happy.
“It has been a long time since that has happened,” he said.
Wilcoxen spends a lot of time in Texas, and said “I thought I was doing good down there at $3.55 when they were paying $3.75 up here.
“I’m just hoping it continues to drop.”
