A man is in the intensive care unit of a local hospital after being hit in the head with a hammer during a party in southwest Wichita on Thursday night, police said.

The 36-year-old victim was driven to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry shortly after 10:30 p.m., where he was treated for a fractured skull and other broken bones, according to a police report. He was transferred to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis and admitted to the neurological intensive care unit.

He is being monitored for possible brain damage, Lt. Doug Nolte said. Based on an interview with the victim, officers discovered the scene of the attack at a house in the 1800 block of South Hiram, northeast of Meridian and May.

A 39-year-old man was identified as the person who allegedly hit the victim with the hammer, Nolte said. He has been questioned but not yet arrested.
