The 31-year-old man shot by a Sumner County homeowner during a burglary early Wednesday morning has an extensive criminal history, including multiple felonies, court records show.
The man remains hospitalized at Wesley Medical Center, recovering from a gunshot wound to his upper left chest, Sumner County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Yoder said Thursday.
Yoder said the suspect is wanted by the Kansas Department of Corrections for violating his parole. The suspect was convicted in 2009 of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. He also has an aggravated burglary conviction in his background.
The suspect was shot at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the garage of a house in northern Sumner County between Mulvane and the Kansas Star Casino, just east of the Kansas Turnpike. The homeowner was awakened by a noise in his garage, took a gun with him and confronted the suspect. He ordered him to stay still as his wife called 911, but the suspect attacked the homeowner, who then shot the intruder in the chest.
A neighbor of the homeowner has said the suspect was attempting to steal a motorcycle when he was caught.
Yoder said the suspect will be charged once he is released from the hospital in a few days, though he may be held in Sedgwick County as a result of the probation violation.
