A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition following a shooting Wednesday evening in southeast Wichita, authorities said.
Gunshots disturbed the tidy neighborhood, located in the 2200 block of East 53rd Street South, shortly before 10 p.m., authorities said. Wichita police Lt. Chris Halloran said a man called 911 after his adult daughter called to say she’d shot her husband. Police officers, who responded within minutes, knocked and forced open the door when they heard a gunshot fired inside the small one-story home.
The pair, who appear to be husband and wife, were found with gunshot wounds, Halloran said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews.
The woman was taken to Wesley Medical Center in critical condition, authorities said. Halloran declined to comment on the extent of her injuries.
Both victims are in their 30s, Halloran said. Police have recovered at least one gun inside the house, he said. It remained unclear Wednesday night who fired the gun or what motivated the shooter.
Halloran said it doesn’t appear a third party was involved. The couple were alone in the house, he said.
The house in located in a residential neighborhood east of Hydraulic. Strands of Christmas lights twinkled on the exterior of a few of the single-story homes. Curious neighbors watched from front their yards or front doors as police investigated the shooting scene.
