Wichita police still aren’t sure what compelled a man to return to a house he had been to earlier in the day Saturday and immediately open fire on the person who opened the door.

George Vasquez Jr., 23, was hit once in the head shortly after 9 p.m. at 827 N. Wabash and collapsed inside the house next to the front door, Lt. Todd Ojile said. When officers arrived at the house northeast of Murdock and Mosley, they found the suspect – identified in arrest records as 28-year-old Hakeem Jackson – arguing in the front yard with the two men who live at the house.

“Right now, we have not come up with the reason why he did it,” Ojile said.

Jackson is “actually very good friends” with the two men who live at the house on Wabash, he said. Vasquez worked with the two residents and may also have worked with Jackson.

Vasquez was visiting the men at the time of the shooting. Two shots were fired, Ojile said, and one hit Vasquez. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At times, Ojile said, Jackson has lived at the house on Wabash with the two current residents.

“He may have still been,” Ojile said. “ We don’t know why he knocked on the door. He’d been hanging out there throughout the day.”

He left for an hour or two and was returning when he knocked on the door and the shooting incident occurred.

Evidence will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office later this week, Ojile said.

Vasquez’s death raises the number of homicides in Wichita this year to 22.
