Wichita police received a report of a man sitting on a curb in the 800 block of North Edgemoor about 1 a.m. on May 9, 2009.

Craig Barnes was lying in the street when officers arrived, and he died 21 hours later at Wesley Medical Center.

Barnes, 27, was never able to tell police what happened. Lt. Randy Reynolds said Friday that the case remains open, and detectives have no suspects.

The unsolved homicide is being highlighted this week by Crime Stoppers of Wichita/Sedgwick County, which has been publicizing selected cold cases this year in an effort to encourage witnesses to come forward with information that could help solve the crimes.

Crime Stoppers is offering $2,000 — twice its normal reward — for information leading to an arrest in Barnes’ death.

A witness told police that before the beating, Barnes was walking down the street when a car drove up and stopped. A man got out the car and beat Barnes before driving off, the witness said. The witness said the man in the car was black, but Reynolds said she was unable to provide any other details about his appearance.

Tips on the case can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111, www.wsccs.com or by texting TIP127 plus a message to 274637 (CRIMES). Information may also be called in toll free at 800-222-8477 (TIPS). Tipsters remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest.

Crime Stoppers and the Wichita Police Department will be highlighting a cold case every Friday through the end of the year.
