Garmin to join Standard & Poor’s 500 index

Garmin Ltd. shares will join the Standard & Poor’s 500 index after trading closes on Tuesday.

The popular stock index tracks large companies whose shares trade publicly in the United States. Standard & Poor’s updates the roster periodically to account for mergers, changes in companies’ standing and other factors.

Olathe-based Garmin joins Sprint Nextel Corp., Cerner Corp. and H&R Block Inc. among Kansas City-area based companies in the S&P 500.
