The Wichita State women’s basketball coaching staff was privately reprimanded by athletic director Eric Sexton for forcing their players to do push-ups on the court during halftime of Tuesday’s game at Koch Arena.

After a first half in which WSU committed 15 turnovers, the Shockers returned from the locker room to do a passing drill during halftime. When they didn’t do the drill properly, they twice did push-ups. WSU defeated Grambling State 62-44 in front of 1,177 fans.

Sexton, in an e-mail, said he spoke with coach Jody Adams and her assistants and privately reprimanded the entire staff.

“The actions taken at halftime of our women’s basketball game Tuesday night were not indicative of the manner that we want to treat any of our student athletes in a public setting,” Sexton said in the e-mail. “We, in no way, wish to express to any of our coaches how they should run their respective programs or teach their team. I feel as though this was an isolated case of poor judgment.”

Sexton said he would not comment further. Adams, on a recruiting trip Friday, declined a chance to comment through WSU’s media relations staff.

The Shockers (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak against winless Grambling State despite committing 25 turnovers. Adams expressed frustration with her team’s play.

“We’ve decided that we’re not going to give into things that are unacceptable,” she said Tuesday. “Things that don’t win big games; things that don’t win championships. We’re not going to allow those things. We’re going to be very consistent with that.”
