Burglaries stymied by observant residents, police

Wichita Police made arrests in at least two burglaries because alert people saw crimes in progress and called 911, police said.

At 1 p.m. on Thursday in the 7000 block of West Frazier, near Central and Ridge, a resident called 911 after seeing two people breaking into a home, said Lt. Doug Nolte.

Officers and the homeowner, arrived shortly afterward and saw a broken back window. Police talked with people in the neighborhood, and witnesses identified people they had seen near the burglarized home. One youth was then arrested and taken to the juvenile detention facility on suspicion of aggravated burglary, and theft. Stolen property was recovered. A second suspect is still at large and police are looking for him, Nolte said.

Police are asking that anyone with information call police.

In another case, police were on special assignment in the 1100 block of East Donnell in south Wichita on Thursday when there was a burglary at a residence at about 12:05 p.m. When the homeowner called 911, police in the block responded within moments, and saw two people leaving the home, carrying stolen property, including a camera, and camera and computer accessories. The men dropped the property and ran, Nolte said.

Officers pursued the men and took them into custody. A 17-year-old boy was taken to the juvenile detention facility; an 18-year-old man was taken to the Sedgwick County Jail, Nolte said.
