A dispute over property landed a 45-year-old man in jail after he reportedly assaulted his girlfriend and then punched two men who came to her aid in downtown Wichita on Monday night, police said.
The incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of North Topeka, Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said. The man and his girlfriend were at a friend’s residence when the couple got into an argument over some property he wanted back.
As the argument escalated, Nolte said, the man forced her to give him the property and began hitting and kicking her. He then took a knife and cut the 45-year-old girlfriend, causing minor injuries. Another man at the gathering intervened, attempting to end the assault, but he was punched, Nolte said. A second man in the room then tried to intervene but was also punched.
Police were called, and the suspect left before officers arrived. He was found not far away, however, and arrested on suspicion of several offenses.
The woman who was attacked was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment of her injuries.
