The woman who was killed while walking with her husband and her dog late Wednesday night in southwest Sedgwick County has been identified as 52-year-old Beatrice Ritchie.

Ritchie was walking south in the 5200 block of 167th Street West - west of K-42 - just after 9:15 p.m. Wednesday when she and her dog were hit by a pickup driving south on 167th, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Randy Cole said.

“My understanding is, they couldn’t hear it coming because the wind was whistling,” Cole said.

They looked up at the last second, he said, and the husband was able to jump out of the pickup’s path. The driver of the pickup swerved in an attempt to avoid them, authorities have said, but struck the woman and their dog. They died at the scene.

Neither the victim’s husband nor the driver of pickup, a 28-year-old man coming to visit family in the area, were injured in the incident.

There is no indication alcohol played a role, Cole said, but the case remains under investigation.
