An elderly man was found dead by a family member in his west Wichita house Sunday afternoon, police said.

The 73-year-old man lived alone at 3501 W. Ninth St., Sgt. Steve Yarberry said. That’s directly south of Black Elementary and north of Central and Zoo Boulevard.

He did not have a history of medical issues, Yarberry said. Initial reports indicated the house had been ransacked, but Yarberry said the residence resembled that of someone who may have been a hoarder.

Homicide detectives are working the scene, and Yarberry said there were some unusual elements to the case – but he would not elaborate.

Neighbors did not report anything unusual, Yarberry said. He had been seen on Thanksgiving and perhaps as recently as Friday, Yarberry said.

The man’s brother went to check on him after not hearing from him for a few days. He was found in his house shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday.
