From the sweet aroma of baking sugar cookies to the thrilling chill of snow, the holiday season offers something for all of the senses.

But nothing quite captures Christmas like a cherished photo — a sight for sore eyes and a vision that allows the season’s magic to live on.

There’s the endearing decades-old snapshot of Mom and Dad on their first Christmas together.

And the new picture of baby’s first Christmas, complete with sleepy, angelic smile.

And the hilarious shot of the gang at last year’s Annual Ugly Sweater Contest.

Each a holiday treasure.

Last year, The Eagle revamped its annual holiday contest and asked readers to look through scrapbooks and memory cards to find your favorite holiday images.

In the inaugural contest, 49 readers entered. A dozen finalists faced a period of online public voting during which readers cast more than 1,600 votes to select winners.

Humorous, vintage or elegant, we want to see your favorite holiday snapshot — and hear the story behind it. The picture’s subject could even be of Fido snoozing under the tree or of the tree itself decorated to perfection.

We’ll narrow down entries to a field of finalists and ask readers to vote for their favorites.

The one that touches their hearts or tickles their funny bones the most will win a $200 gift card. Second place gets a $150 gift card, and third earns a $100 gift card. One honorable mention winner will receive a $50 gift card.

And now for the fine print:

The Wichita Eagle’s Holiday Photo Contest

Entrants are invited to submit an original holiday snapshot and the story behind the image. A panel of judges will select a group of finalists, with consideration given to the quality and content of both the photo and the essay.

Online voting will run from Dec. 10 through noon Dec. 16 on Kansas.com. Registered users can cast one vote per day during the voting period.

We’ll publish winning entries in The Eagle and on Kansas.com on Dec. 23.
