A Wichita man who was selling his handgun shot himself Friday afternoon before he could complete the sale.

Wichita Police Sgt. Bruce Watts said the accidental shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. Friday in the 1200 block of South Laura.

Watts said a man was going to a house in that area to purchase the victim’s handgun that was advertised on Craigslist.

As the buyer approached the door, he heard a gunshot from inside the house. Moments later, the victim opened the door and said he had shot himself and to call an ambulance.

“He apparently was cleaning a 9 mm Taurus, which accidentally discharged, striking him in the hand, the left palm to be exact,” Watts said Saturday.

The man was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, Watts said.
