An early morning fire that started on the back deck of a west Wichita home caused $250,000 in estimated damage, authorities say.

Crews were dispatched at about 1 a.m. Saturday to the report of a house fire in the area of 500 Evergreen Lane, east of Tyler Road between Maple and Kellogg, a Sedgwick County dispatcher said.

The first-arriving crews reported the house was on fire and asked for more units, she said.

“They pretty well went defensive from the beginning,” Wichita fire investigator Mark Reibenspies said by phone Saturday afternoon.

Three adults in the home escaped without injury, but some household pets died in the fire, he said.

The house — a 2,000-square-foot bi-level — is a total loss, Reibenspies said. Damage is estimated at $175,000 to structure and $75,000 to contents.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.
