When searching for an authentic Mexican meal, we often think of several restaurants on the north side of Wichita.

But Los Compadres, at 31st and Hillside, offers an option on the south side of town.

We started off a recent visit with the usual chips and salsa. The salsa is homemade and packed full of cilantro. We also sampled a bowl of queso, which, while flavorful, was a bit runny.

The menu offers many familiar Mexican dishes, including tacos, burritos, tortas and quesadillas. Los Compadres is proud of its slow-cooked barbacoa beef, so we decided to try it on several different entrees. I went with the barbacoa torta, the Mexican version of a sandwich, piled high with lettuce, guacamole and sour cream.

The tender beef and toasted bun made this a good and filling torta. We also ordered a barbacoa burrito, which was stuffed full of the wonderful meat, as well as lettuce and sour cream. The burrito was equally as flavorful as the torta, and we enjoyed having the extra fillings to enhance the flavor.

My husband ordered a barbacoa taco, a carnitas (pork) taco and a side of frijoles charros. The tacos came served in the traditional way: open-faced with cilantro and onions. Their simplicity is what made them so wonderful, allowing the meat to be the star of the taco. The pork was tender and seasoned nicely.

The frijoles charros was a hearty bowl of chili beans with chunks of jalapeno, onion and — oddly — hot dog. The frijoles had a good kick from the jalapenos and would be perfect on a cool fall day.

Overall, we were pleased with our meal and will definitely go back.

The service at Los Compadres was friendly and attentive. Our food came out quickly and was nice and hot, and our glasses were always full. The dining area is spacious, with a decor dominated by horses. The meal was also affordable. We fed three adults and, with tip included, it was around $32.
