Flames destroyed the attached garage of a southeast Wichita home Wednesday, causing about $80,000 in damage, a fire official said.
Four adults and two children escaped the house, in the 8800 block of East Hurst, after a fire started in its garage shortly before 6 p.m., Wichita fire Battalion Chief Tom Carney said by phone Wednesday. When firefighters arrived, fire had engulfed the building. Crews doused the flames then moved inside of the home, where they found more fire in the attic after pulling down portions of the ceiling.
The flames were extinguished within 20 minutes, Carney said. Fire crews rescued a dog trapped inside, and no one was hurt.
The house is south of Pawnee and east of Rock Road. Damage is estimated at $60,000 to the building and $20,000 to personal property.
Authorities called the American Red Cross to assist those displaced by the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
