A McPherson County man has pleaded guilty in federal court to producing child pornography, authorities said.

Philip A. Grigsby, 50, of Marquette pleaded guilty to eight counts of sexual exploitation of a child, one count of possession of child pornography and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a prepared statement.

According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, an investigation began in Australia earlier this year after an Australian man was arrested by police. Evidence in the case showed the man had received child pornography over the Internet from other men, including Grigsby in Kansas.

Investigators found e-mails sent by Grigsby to the Australian, including attachments with images of child pornography. The name of a middle school was visible on a certificate in one of the photos, Grissom said. That helped investigators identify the location and identity of the victim.

Investigators obtained other evidence during a search at Grigsby’s house, including more than 400 images and five movies showing the sexual exploitation of a minor as well as other images of child pornography, Grissom said.

Grigsby’s sentencing is set for Feb. 4. He faces a penalty of not less than 15 years and not more than 30 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count of sexual exploitation of a child; a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000 on the possession charge; and a maximum penalty of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000 on the firearm charge.
