A 70-year-old Augusta woman is in critical condition after her car collided with a semi truck in Chautauqua County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Wilma M. Journell fell asleep late Tuesday morning while driving her 2004 Cadillac eastbound on U.S. Highway 166, 8.5 miles east of Cedarvale. She crossed the center line and crashed into the trailer axle of a 2006 Freightliner, which was headed west on the highway. The Cadillac eventually stopped in the westbound lane, facing east.
The accident happened about 11:25 a.m., according to the highway patrol’s online crash log.
Journell was taken to Wesley Medical Center to treat her injuries. She was listed in critical condition, a hospital operator said Tuesday night.
The 49-year-old semi driver, Gregory W. Roberts, of Coffeyville, was not hurt in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the highway patrol.
