Five people were displaced by a fire that heavily damaged a house in south Wichita early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. at 2939 S. Millwood, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. That is northwest of Seneca and 31st Street South.

The blaze appears to have started in the laundry room of an attached garage, the supervisor said. The Red Cross was called out to assist two adults and three children who live there. They were able to escape the fire unharmed.

Fire Capt. Stuart Bevis said the blaze caused an estimated $60,000 in damage to the house and its contents. The fire appears to be an accident, he said in an e-mail response to questions, though an exact cause has not yet been established.
