Wichita schools collecting turkeys for families in need

Turkey drive

To donate to the United Methodist Open Door turkey drive on behalf of Wichita schools, inquire at your child’s school or go to the Alvin Morris Administrative Center, 201 N. Water, between 6 and 9 a.m. Friday. Volunteers and JROTC cadets will be stationed along Water Street that morning to take donations of frozen turkeys, canned goods or money.

Don’t be surprised if your child says he wants to bring a turkey to school this week.

Wichita public schools are participating again in the annual turkey drive for United Methodist Open Door, which helps supply Thanksgiving turkeys and other food for families.

The effort is “an incredible example of our students’ understanding of the need in our community, and the need to be a positive part of the community,” said Superintendent John Allison.

This is the seventh year the district will participate in the drive. Last year, Wichita schools collected 3,663 turkeys, more than $12,300 in monetary donations and thousands of canned goods.

Among many schools, particularly high schools, the drive is an intense competition to collect the most turkeys or pounds of food and win bragging rights.

But that’s not the only reason students go all out, Allison said.

“Every year they know that if we don’t (collect food), there will be families without at a very important time,” he said. “They really value their ability to give back.”
