Police say a man drove himself to the hospital after he was shot in the head early Saturday evening.

The man, 30, walked into Wesley Medical Center’s emergency room at about 6:30 p.m. after a bullet "struck his head ... traveled along his skull and possibly exited out the front," Wichita police Sgt. Don Story said by phone Saturday. He drove to the hospital for treatment, fully conscious and aware of his injuries.

Based on the man’s statements to police, authorities think the shooting occurred in the 1200 block of North Piatt shortly before 6:30 p.m. Story said investigating officers found blood in the area, but no weapon or shell casings.

Police had no leads on a possible suspect Saturday night, Story said. He described the man’s condition as stable and said there is no immediate evidence the wound was self-inflicted.
