A woman fought off her boyfriend with a knife after he attacked her with a glass ashtray late Friday, Wichita police said.

A domestic scuffle escalated when a 37-year-old man used the ashtray to repeatedly hit his 29-year-old girlfriend’s neck and shoulders, Wichita police Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said. The woman escaped briefly but when the man came after her again, she picked up a knife and slashed at his face, cutting an eyelid.

The dispute happened in the 1100 block of S. Terrace, near Lincoln and Oliver, around 11:40 p.m. Friday.

The man was admitted to Wesley Medical Center for “some extensive treatment to his eye,” Brunscheen said. He is expected to be taken into custody upon his release from the hospital, he said.

Brunscheen said the woman “reports that she was defending herself,” and her injuries match her account of the dispute.
